Sports in Adelaide are many and varied. There are all the well known ones: Australian Rules Football, archery, baseball, basketball, cricket, cycling, golf, netball, rugby, soccer, swimming and tennis – even lesser known ones such as Dragon Boat Racing.
As proof of professional sports in Adelaide, the city has two Australian Football League (AFL) teams, the Adelaide Crows and Port Power, and nine South Australian National Football League (SANFL) teams; two basketball teams – one men’s (the Adelaide 36ers) and one women’s (Adelaide Lightning); one netball team (the Adelaide Thunderbirds); and one soccer team (Adelaide United).
With the city hosting the Tour Down Under every January, cycling has become one of the more popular sports in Adelaide lately.
There is not a suburb in Adelaide that does not have a sporting ground, oval, parkland, sporting facility or property of some kind. The idea of sports in Adelaide is highly respected and not taken lightly.
